Trusting In God

Psalm 146:3-5 (NLT)

Don’t put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help for you there.

When they breathe their last, they return to the earth, and all their plans die with them.

But joyful are those who have the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the LORD their God.

While we can trust people from time to time, , in the most important matters, however, we cannot afford to lean on the broken crutch of human aid. Ultimately, we are bound to be disappointed because people—even those who mean well—will fail us.

Why?

First, human beings are weak; even those we think that they are most powerful are limited in what they can do (remember young children who think that their father is the most powerful man on earth?). Unlike God, people do not have sovereign control over people, nations, nature, or time. Their limitations make them inconsistent, unable to help when it is needed most. This is very true even from the disciples of Jesus as Mark 14: 50-52 tells us on the night of His arrest, everyone deserted him and fled. David too felt abandoned by his friends during his greatest hour of need - Psalms 55:12-14

Secondly man is mortal- they are here today and gone tomorrow. "Surely men of low degree are a vapor, men of high degree are a lie; if they are weighed on the scales, they are altogether lighter than vapor." Psalms 62:9. For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 1Peter 1:24.

Finally, they are unreliable - they have self interests which may or may not align to our own goals. Princes—leaders—especially, do not have our best interests in mind, as they have, not only personal desires, but also political goals to pursue. This is so evident during this campaign period when all politicians are seeking to position themselves strategically for future gains. Sad that we put more trust on our politicians, yet they are always wavering and blatantly cheating us daily. They do not believe what they say!!!!!

The truth is that, in the end men are only men, and subject to death. Ashes turn to ashes and dust to dust, and even the brilliant plans of man perish. He cannot save himself, he cannot save us. "When we put our trust in man, we rob God of his glory; we are giving to others the confidence which belongs alone to Him.” (Spurgeon). "Resting in the Lord, we know a happiness which is beyond description, beyond comparison, beyond conception.” (Spurgeon).

God always has our best interest at heart.  Moreover, He is always faithful to what He has promised (I Corinthians 1:9). It is "In God we live and move and have our being. The beating heart, the throbbing pulse, every nerve and muscle in the living organism, is kept in order and activity by the power of an ever-present God". MH 417.1

Will you put your trust in this God today?

I pray that we stand on Jesus Christ the solid rock

For all other ground is sinking sand

Amen
